Enter Captain Edward L. Berthoud. In 1877, the Colorado Central Railroad was being built through the area. Edward L. Berthoud, a Swiss-born engineer, surveyed the route. His contributions were significant. The townspeople decided to honor him by renaming their town “Berthoud” in 1880.
Bonus facts:
Berthoud wasn’t just an engineer. He was also a prominent figure in Colorado’s early development. He helped found the Colorado School of Mines and even has a mountain pass named after him.
Berthoud wasn’t always in its current location. After the arrival of the railroad, the town relocated about a mile north to be closer to the tracks. This spot is where Berthoud stands today.
