Don’t Let A Leaky Faucet Drive Up Your Water Bill

Don'T Let A Leaky Faucet Drive Up Your Water BillA leaky faucet might not seem like a big deal at first. But when all of those drips and drops add up over time, you’ll be paying a lot more than you should on your water bill. Depending on its location, a leaky faucet also can lead to water damage in your home. And, as we all know, it doesn’t take a lot of water to do a lot of damage.

Faucet leaks can occur in several places. Sometimes, the leak occurs at the base of the faucet. In other instances, water will drip from the tap. These leaks commonly occur when a rubber washer has worn out. The good news is that these washers can be replaced and you can go on using your faucet. However, if your faucet is leaking at the base, it’s likely it will need to be replaced.

There are other times when a faucet leak won’t appear anywhere near the faucet. Check the cabinets beneath your sinks every few months to search for signs of moisture. Even a slow leak can waste up to 20 gallons of water every day. Plus, more often than not, small leaks will worsen over time.

We can help you fix any of the following problems with your faucet, including:

  • Dripping and leaky faucet
  • Tight faucet handles
  • Loose faucet handles
  • Corroded faucets
  • Running faucets

Flush Your Worries With Our Toilet Installations And Repairs

Toilet Installations And Repairs In Denver, CoWhen there’s a problem with our toilets, we tend to treat the area like it’s a crime scene. But with our plumbers nearby, you don’t need to block off the bathroom or put up caution tape. We’ll fix your toilet quickly and make it look like the problem never happened!

The vast majority of toilet problems stem from a leaking flapper. This is the round device that’s attached to the toilet handle with a chain. Because Denver, CO, has such poor water quality, it’s common for these flappers to deteriorate.

If your flapper is leaking, this can cause your toilet to run constantly, prevent the toilet from shutting off and prevent it from flushing at all. Whether your toilet won’t stop making noises or you’re having trouble flushing it, we probably can refurbish your toilet and get it working like new again.

Contact us if you’re experiencing any of the following problems with your toilet:

  • Bowl draining slowly, overflowing or leaking
  • Clogged toilet
  • Tank vibrating when filling
  • Constant running water
  • Loose seat
  • Toilet continuously flushing
  • Toilet leaking at the base

We service all major brands of toilets, including:

  • Kohler
  • American Standard
  • Gerber
  • Toto
  • Western

If your toilet can’t be saved, we offer complete toilet installations and replacements. You also might want to consider replacing your toilet if it is an older model or uses a lot of water. Upgrading to a newer, low-flow model could drastically reduce your water consumption and lower your monthly water bills.

Faucet & Toilet FAQ

First, determine the color. (White is most common.) Next, you need to determine the toilet rough-in, the distance from the wall to the center of the toilet’s waste outlet. Measure the distance from the wall to the center of the toilet or where the bolts are holding the toilet to the floor. The three sizes are: 10” rough, 12” rough and 14” rough, with 12” rough the most common. From there, determine if you want the bowl to be round or elongated. Round bowls are smaller and work better in smaller bathrooms. Elongated bowls are bigger and provide more area to do your business. Determine if you want the bowl standard height or “comfort height” (approximately 2” higher than standard height toilets. Some people, including many senior citizens, prefer higher types because they are easier on the knees. In addition to the actual toilet, remember to order a toilet seat. (Many toilets don’t come with them!) We like the “soft close” seats because they don’t slam and softly close on their own.

Need help making these decisions? That’s what we’re here for! Contact us to discuss your needs with our plumbers and pick the right toilet for you.

If you have a screwdriver, you can do this yourself. Look for two white, square-looking tabs where the toilet seat connects to the bowl. On most toilet seats, these just flip open via a quick connect. You can use a flat-head screwdriver to pry them open. Once they’re open, put the screwdriver in the bolts. Underneath the toilet, where the bolts pass through, hold the nut with one hand and tighten the screw with the other hand. Make sure the toilet seat is aligned with the bowl. Repeat on the other side. Close the flaps and you’re in business! Can’t figure it out? Give us a call and we’ll repair your toilet seat for you.

First, you need to determine which brand you want. (We prefer Grohe or Kohler.) Secondly, determine how many holes you have on your sink. Typically, there will be three or four. This is important because some faucets are only designed for one- or two-hole applications. However, most come with a baseplate that can cover up any extra holes. Next, decide if you want a pull-out spray, side spray or no spray at all. We recommend big brand names because it’s easier to get replacement parts if needed. Many times, homeowners purchase faucets from Europe. But years later, when they need replacement parts, they often learn the products have been discontinued. So they’re forced to put in a whole new faucet.

We don’t encourage the use of plungers because they can blow out the wax seal at the base of the toilet. That’s why our plumbers use toilet augers, which can be tricky to use. If you don’t have experience with augers, they can scratch your toilet. If you aren’t confident using them and are afraid of scratching your toilet, our plumbers will take care of it for you.

If the toilet has been leaking only for a few days or weeks, typically your subflooring will dry out on its own. However, if the toilet has been leaking for several months or years, there is a good chance your subflooring will need to be repaired or replaced.

Plumbers call this the ghost flush because the toilet flushes on its own. Often, you can fix this problem yourself. Ghost flushes are typically caused by a bad flapper. Turn off the water supply near the bottom left-hand side of the toilet. (Turn clockwise approximately two turns.) Remove the flapper (the round, rubber-looking piece connected to the chain) and bring it to your local home improvement store to try to get a close match to the size and shape. Reconnect the new flapper without giving too much slack on the chain. Turn the water supply back on and that ghost flush should vanish. If you’ve taken these steps and the ghost flush remains, give us a call and we’ll correct the problem.
